The transformation of Exhibition Road has been recognised by the granting of an award by the Civic Trust.
The Civic Trust says “The Exhibition Road project has replaced a street filled with clutter and vehicular traffic with a kerb-free public space. Pedestrians can now enjoy the walk from South Kensington Station to Hyde Park along a striking new space that befits the magnificent surrounding buildings. This tapestry, which extends from Kensington Road to Cromwell Gardens, creates a welcoming and attractive public environment which allows vehicles through, but raises the importance of the pedestrian and the many visitors who congregate outside the great museums every day. The journey along Exhibition Road has been improved by the simple approach of a common shared surface in high quality materials, enhancing the pedestrian experience. It seeks to provide London with a new, attractive and accessible public space. A place to meet, linger and enjoy.”
I’m proud that the hard work of everybody involved in the scheme has been recognised by the Civic Trust , RIBA, London Transport and the Institute of Civil Engineers with a bunch of awards that cover practically every virtuous aspect of the road.
